In Brief
'Ren and Stimpy' follows the fever dream adventures of a scrawny, sick-minded and often psychotically aggressive Chihuahua - Ren Höek - and his happy-go-lucky house mate Stimpson J Cat, a potato shaped imbecilic fat cat. Created by renegade Canadian animator and producer John Kricfalusi for the children’s cable channel Nickelodeon in 1991, the series soon ran into censorship trouble due to it’s twisted adult humour, and Kricfalusi found himself unceremoniously booted from his own show in the middle of the second season.

In Depth
In a similar format to the Hanna-Barbera cartoons of the 1960s, any given episode could find the duo in a different location, era of history, or place of employment - giving the animators a fresh set up to start throwing nasty stuff at the pair.
Kricfalushi - who provided the voice of Ren during his tenure - was a big fan of animation from the golden age of Hollywood, especially the buttwild work of Warner Bros. director Bob Clampett. The show tried to shoe horn some of his outrageous excesses, which led to many episodes going over budget and over schedule.
The satirical, gross out, pop culture referencing, wit of the Kricfalusi era was certainly missed once a new production house took over, despite their best attempts to duplicate his style. The show continued to run for another four years, reaching a total of 52 episodes. A decade after his departure John K was invited to produce a short series of more adult orientated episodes, with limited success...
