In Brief
From Slough to Scranton: Britain's smash-hit comedy trades one suburb for another as it crosses the Atlantic for a fast-paced American make-over. With new faces such as film star Steve Carell in a new location, it's an all-new kind of funny. Whoever said the David Brent character would never work in America was wrong!

In Depth
The fake film crews are back, this time in a different office: American paper company Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch. Regional Manager Michael (Steve Carell) takes over where Ricky Gervais left off and puts several busloads of chin-stroking cynics in their place by doing a damn fine job of it: so much so that the show won a Golden Globe and an Emmy. And it's not hard to see why. Irritating, obnoxious and the bane of his employees' working lives, Michael is just what the viewers ordered for a buffoon to be ridiculed.
And just as we trade David Brent for Michael, all the other characters from the UK original are re-invented for their US counterpart too: giving us salesman Jim (John Krasinski) in love with receptionist Pam (Jenna Fischer) while he sabotages the work of his colleague, the know-it-all Dwight (Rainn Wilson). See the parallels?
At the heart of the show lives the same fool-proof premise of the British original, but transposed into the new setting takes on a rib-ticklingly funny life of its own. Fans of Gervais' baby, don't be put off, The American Office is a more than worthy protégée.
