In Brief

A parody of fly on the wall documentaries, The office is a witty combination of films such as Office Space and This is Spinal Tap. Set in a Slough paper merchant, the series centers around boss from hell David Brent( Co-creator Ricky Gervais) and his constant need to be liked by his frequently bored looking workforce. Allowing a film crew to follow him gives David ample opportunity to wisecrack but all he seems to do is highlight why his staff dislike him so much.

In Depth

A parody of fly on the wall documentaries, The office is a witty combination of films such as Office Space and This is Spinal Tap. Set in a Slough paper merchant, the series centers around boss from hell David Brent( Co-creator Ricky Gervais) and his constant need to be liked by his frequently bored looking workforce. Allowing a film crew to follow him gives David ample opportunity to wisecrack but all he seems to do is highlight why his staff dislike him so much.
Dawn(Lucy Davis), the receptionist is fed up with answering phones all day and so passes the time by chatting and occasionally flirting with sales rep Tim(Martin Freeman). Tim is the only rational and sane person in the office and there's an obvious spark between the two despite Dawn being engaged to someone else. The mischievous pair are frequently playing pranks on Gareth(Mackenzie Crook) who is not only David's second in command but also swears by military training he's probably never had judging by his weedy disposition.
Gareth constantly sucks up to David and sometimes joins him when being interviewed by the film crew. Their ridiculous attempts at political correctness are undermined by many foot in mouth moments which highlight what an obnoxious pair they really are.
Having worked in an office for seven years, Ricky Gervais wrote the series with partner Stephen Merchant. After winning several awards, the popularity of the series propelled Gervais as a leading comic talent and also spawned an equally popular US version of the show.
