The Next Generation follows the crew of the Starship Enterprise continuing their mission to explore the universe and gain a better understand of humanity through the Alien races they encounter, this time under command of Captain Jean-Luc Piccard. It was the first modern-day Star Trek spin-off (see Star Trek for back-story) since the original which first aired in 1968. It takes place in the 24th Century and marks the introduction of an upgraded Enterprise boasting a new look carrying a wealth greater technology.

The Next Generation follows the crew of the Starship Enterprise continuing their mission to explore the universe and gain a better understand of humanity through the Alien races they encounter, this time under command of Captain Jean-Luc Piccard. It was the first modern-day Star Trek spin-off (see Star Trek for back-story) since the original which first aired in 1968. It takes place in the 24th Century and marks the introduction of an upgraded Enterprise boasting a new look carrying a wealth greater technology. It is a ship of exploration yet a powerful battleship that is known throughout the galaxy by many races, friend and foe. The show introduces new characters including Commander Riker, DATA – a very likable and highly advanced android who seeks to understand the human psyche in his efforts to become more human. Doctor Crusher and her young , intelligent and eager son Wesley, Geordie La Forge is the blind head of engineering whose vision is assisted by a visor that enables him to make out shapes and formations allowing him to walk around with the ease of someone who has normal vision and Diana Troy, a telepathic woman who is the ship’s counsellor. Together they navigate through the solar systems settling diplomatic disputes, protecting the innocent and exploring un-chartered space. The series introduces new villains to the Star Trek universe such as the Borg and gives a lot of time in understanding and learning about the human’s age-long former enemies, the Klingons. Star Trek The Next Generation is a science fiction fan’s dream show in many respects. It opens the imagination to a vast array of possibilities, introducing fantastic worlds and unique alien species while offering philosophical food-for-thought and plenty of great action and entertainment. Patrick Stewart who plays Captain Piccard offers tremendous skill and his acting is of the highest quality. He brings a level of sophistication to the role that earns him the right to sit in the Captain’s chair and is quite correctly considered by many as the finest actor in the show.
