In Depth

If God?s sense of humour spans all types of comedy, then the heavens have surely been rocked by the sound of laughter. If not, all fans of Southpark are going straight to hell without the possibility of redemption. Southpark is to the world of cartoons what Larry Flint was to the world of adult magazines, a pioneer. It is the most politically incorrect cartoon around where not a single taboo exists. The creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker have left no subject untouched from race, religion, politics and celebrity to sexual gender, fetishes and medical conditions. It is a two-dimensional cartoon about four eight year-old friends growing up in the fictional town of Southpark, Colorado. It revolves around the lives of Kyle Broflovski, Stan Marsh, Eric Cartman and Kenny. In true and yet slightly edited Southpark speak; Kyle is the Jew, Stan is the wimp, Eric is the fat bigot and Kenny is poor. As with most children, they often argue and bicker but unlike most eight-year-olds they do so in the most profane ways making use of the very worst words in the English language which adds to the painfully hilarious reactions by the often shocked audience. This show is not for the prudish. It is a raw, unadulterated, dark cartoon comedy which deals equally between the pains of growing up and the issues of the day. The show never fails to offend one group or another and makes no apologies as the creators have said that the rebukes are spread evenly and everybody gets their fair share of criticism. There is often a moral to the story and the children?s observations of life and how they see the world around them as they go about their daily and often far-fetched lives are beautifully constructed. From Aliens, to Jesus who has a TV-show of his own, Satan, Saddam, a sex-obsessed school chef, to the unforgettable school counsellor Mr Mackey, Mr Garrison, a teacher with a multiple personality and a bad temper, to all sorts of crazy and utterly unique characters who display very true-to-life behavioural and psychological characteristics. There is only one word that can truly sum up this show and that word is genius. There is genius in the storylines, in the dialogue and particularly in the editing. On top of the mountain of praises that are sung about Southpark, it also boasts one of the most incredible audience realisations of any cartoon ever created which comes in episode two of season one which in itself is enough to get any viewer completely addicted to the insane and award winning humour of one of the world?s most laughed at shows.
