In Depth
Smallville chronicles the teenage years of Clark Kent also known as Superman. Krypton, a planet in a far away galaxy is on the verge of destruction. In an attempt to save the species from extinction, a caring father sends his baby boy, by way of a small space ship, towards earth so that he may survive the disaster and live on. The baby’s Kryptonian name is Kal-El and he comes to earth travelling amongst the remnants of the planet in the form of a meteor shower that falls heavily upon the small town of Smallville. The baby is found by the Jonathan and Martha Kent who live on a quiet farm and they decide to take him in and adopt him as their own. Kal-El becomes Clark Kent, a young man with superhuman abilities, able to travel faster than the eye can see, deflect bullets with his skin and is armed with incredible strength and hearing. Clark keeps his secret well hidden from the outside world as he comes to terms with the meaning of life while blending in with those who can’t see past his normal exterior. He develops friendships at school while his foster parents steer him in the right direction, morally and ethically. The show focuses on Clark’s life from the age of sixteen and onwards. His only weakness is a green glowing rock known as Kryptonite which followed him among the meteor rocks that accompanied Clark’s journey to Earth after Krypton’s destruction. The rocks had potent and lasting affects on some of the inhabitants of the town and Clark’s battles are often between those who also display superhuman abilities thanks to their childhood exposure to Kryptonite. Smallville gives ample time to the development of Lex Luthor, a very wealthy, lonely and cold yet quite human character that befriends some of the teens and takes an interest in the goings on of Smallville. His family are known for their sometimes unscrupulous dealings and his family background is dark and troubled. His progression throughout the show is as important as Clark’s as Lex Luthor will feature prominently in the life of Superman as he does in the life of Clark Kent. Smallville is a well rounded show. The most notable performances come from Tom Welling who plays Clark Kent and in particular Michael Rosenbaum whose portrayal of the Lex Luther character is quite remarkable. The special effects are of a high quality and the story progression from season to season is well paced. This show is a good example of, the more you watch the more you want to watch. It does not necessarily grip the audience in a whirlwind of television euphoria but there is plenty of entertainment to be had by watching and no doubt those who see it through will find the story arcs become stronger and stronger as the characters develop and age. There is no shortage of murder and intrigue in Smallville and though the show is geared towards a younger audience, fans of Superman will welcome Smallville into the annals of Superman history as the show’s portrayal of his early years is mature, sometimes very dark in nature yet always very well executed.
