In Brief
If you draw up a list of the most Mancunian things you can think of chances are, somewhere next to Boddington's bitter and a swagger-based walking style, will be the scallyish comedy-drama Shameless.

In Depth
Who says northerners are misrepresented in the media? Shameless does its bit for national understanding by showing things as they really are! Starring David Threlfall as valiant anti-hero Frank Gallagher and following the exploits of his varyingly feckless family, the show is one of the noughties' longest-running and most popular dramas. In fact Shameless has picked up a string of awards, including a BAFTA for best drama, in recognition of its undeniably strong writing and performances.

The show has also provided a vital stepping stone in the careers of actors including Anne Marie Duff and Maxine Peake, not to mention a route to Hollywood for 'Atonement's' James McAvoy, who starred as 'posh' car thief Steve in the first two series.
Like Coronation Street (but on six pints), Shameless uses a distinctly Mancunian wit to accurately convey the ups and downs of suburban life north of the gap, painting a picture that is as funny as it is sad and dramatic.
The writers' great skill is that, in being unafraid to tackle 'big' issues like addiction, religion and the welfare state, they continually imbue proceedings with just enough dry wit - not to mention the odd moment of throwaway slapstick - to make sure that viewers never feel bogged down by the genuinely challenging themes being explored.
