In Brief
Each season of ‘24’ follows 24 hours in the life of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), an agent with the Los Angeles branch of CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit). However in these 24 hours Jack has to usually stop a nuclear bomb from going off, or a deadly virus from being unleashed or World War III from erupting….and all in real time. This means that you are with Jack for every single second of these 24 hours over 24 nail biting episodes as he fights to save the day.

Simply by viewing the show, it is clear that it is aimed to look as good as a movie. Every scene is exceptionally staged featuring incredible stunts involving helicopters blowing up buildings and gunfights in crowded streets commonplace. With action this good the pace is never allowed to stop and it is impossible to stop watching once you have started.
There are, of course, other regular characters in the show but another of ‘24’s great tricks is that they are often killed or despatched without warning. Once you have got comfortable with them the show has a knack of taking them away, so the viewer is never left to rest on their laurels and the feeling of ‘anything can happen’ is always prevalent.
The one constant is Jack. Over the course of the show, his character has evolved slowly becoming more and more layered through Sutherland’s performance. What could have easily been a run-of-the-mill action clichéd performance, Sutherland turns Bauer into a sensitive and tortured soul. A man constantly at pains knowing that his job will always prevent him from having any emotional contact with those closest to him. Jack Bauer is the very heart of ‘24’.
